Power Electronics Course

Power Electronics Course

Golden Flower Hotel, BANDUNG | September  28 – October 01, 2010 | US$ 990.00/person

BACKGROUND

Power electronics have become an important discipline in electrical engineering. Basically, power electronics is a discipline that deals with control and conversion of electrical power.  The use of power electronics in industries is growing tremendously in the recent years. Power electronics are used in power generation, power transmission and distribution, and in the power utilization. In power generation, power electronics have been used since a long time ago in automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and excitation system of synchronous generators. In power transmission and distribution, power electronics have been used as static VAR compensators and recently as active power conditioners. In the utilization side, there are so many applications that ranging from several kW to several MW. It used in variable speed drives, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), induction heating, electric welding, dc power supplies, battery chargers, and soft starters.  In all of these applications, high efficiency operation is the basic requirement.

Though power electronics can be used to increase the plant productivity and reliability and also to improve the product quality, power electronics based equipment may bring a problem if it is not applied properly. Switching operations of power electronics may bring harmonic problems.

The wide and vast applications of power electronics in industries have made the management to prepare engineers and technicians that aware and understand this technology.  How to apply and maintain equipment based on this technology has become very important.

COURSE OBJECTIVE

Upon the completion of this training, you will able to:

  • Describe the power electronics components

  • Describe the operation of rectifiers, inverters, dc-dc converters, and ac-ac converters

  • Describe the control methods for rectifiers, inverters, dc-dc converters, and ac-ac converters.

  • Maintain and troubleshoot the equipment based on power electronics.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS COURSE?

Industrial engineers and technicians that involve in designing, specifying, operating, and maintaining equipment based on power electronics should attend this course. No special backgrounds are required to attend this course.

Course Method and Outline

The course on power electronics is conducted by combining a class tutorial and laboratory experiments. Laboratory experiments are considered important because practical experiences are necessary to mastering the power electronics.  The use of computer software to analyze a power electronic circuit is also introduced.

The course outline is as follows:

Rectifiers. The output and input characteristics are discussed thoroughly. Harmonics and power factor problems that generated by rectifiers are discussed. PWM rectifiers and unity power factor rectifiers are also introduced

AC-AC CONVERTERS

The most common applications of ac-ac converters are lamp dimmers, soft-starters, static ac switches, and static VAR compensators.  In this session, the basic characteristics of ac-ac converters are discussed. The ac-ac converters those will be discussed are ac voltage regulators and cycloconverters. Harmonic characteristics of ac-ac converters are also emphasized.

DC-DC Converters

Dc-dc converter is commonly used in a dc switch mode power supply.  The needs of smaller and smaller dc power supplies have made the technology of this converter is growing very fast. Understanding of this technology is also useful to understand the operation of inverters. Isolated and nonisolated dc power supplies will be discussed in this session.

Inverters

An inverter is commonly used in a variable speed drives and UPS. At present, most of inverter is controlled by a pulse width modulation (PWM) technique. A lot of PWM techniques have been proposed in the literature. In this session, the basic characteristics and control methods of inverters are discussed. Applications of inverters as rectifiers, SVC, and active power conditioners are discussed. By using a PWM technique, an inverter can be controlled as a variable-voltage variable-frequency ac source.

Applications of Power Electronics

In this session, applications of power electronics are discussed. AVR, excitation system, variable speed drives, UPS, battery chargers, and ac voltage regulators are discussed. The basic characteristics of each application are treated thoroughly. Special emphasizes are given to variable speed drives and UPS. Practical application considerations are also emphasized. New applications of power electronics are also introduced.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance

In this session, a practical method to do a troubleshooting is introduced. A special practical experiment has been designed for this purpose. The use of computer software in troubleshooting is also introduced. Ho to maintain power electronic equipment is also discussed.  How to solve harmonic and power factor problems are also introduced.

WATER FLOODING

WATER FLOODING

Hotel Golden Flower Bandung | 1 – 5 November 2010 | Rp 7.450.000/person

xx

INTRODUCTION :

Water flooding is a method of secondary recovery in which water is injected into the reservoir formation to displace residual oil. The water from injection wells physically sweeps the displaced oil to adjacent production wells. Potential problems associated with waterflood techniques include inefficient recovery due to variable permeability, or similar conditions affecting fluid transport within the reservoir, and early water breakthrough that may cause production and surface processing problems. This training is addressed to them who want to know and to deepen their understanding and practical aspects of water flooding.
